Seeking His Heart

Sing them over again to me, wonderful words of life;

Let me more of their beauty see, wonderful words of life;

Words of life and beauty, teach me faith and duty:

Beautiful words, wonderful words, wonderful words of life.

Words. A wonderful gift of our heavenly father. A way to communicate. A medium that helps us explain or teach or empower. A means by which we can express love, concern, encouragement. A platform to share our stories.

Word-plays can challenge our minds or tickle our funny bones. Try these on for size. (Thanks, Phil.)

To write with a broken pencil is pointless.

The batteries were given out – free of charge.

A will is a dead giveaway.

As fun or loving or thoughtful as words can be, they can also bite, break, harm or hurt.   Our words can express, impress, digress or depress.

Writers often tell their own stories in their writing. I’m thinking of words I said last week that I wish I could pull back in and express in a softer way. Do you ever feel like that about your words? Fortunately, we can also use our words to say, “I’m sorry.” or “Forgive me.”

God has given us a plethora of words. (Love that word – “plethora!”) But our hymn today speaks of God’s words, words that are wonderful and beautiful.

Savor each word of the psalmist:

The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple. Psalm 119:130

Isn’t that beautiful? “The unfolding of your words gives light.” Later, he says,

All your words are true; all your righteous laws are eternalPsalm 119:160

That’s the wonderment of His words; they are eternal.

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path. Psalm 119:105

As Jesus gave His “I am the vine” lesson about the importance of abiding or remaining in Him, He said,

“If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish and it will be given you.” John 15:7

Lord, help us to stay so connected to you that your words would unfold around us, giving us light, a light that guides us in the path you have laid out for us. As we dwell in you and your word, help us to remember your words, speak your beautiful words, and live out those wonderful words of life eternal.
