Spring Flowers

It’s time for Spring flowers! For me (in Kentucky) that happens close to Kentucky Derby Day, the first weekend in May. I love to plant pinks, purples, and white flowers in a flower bed in the back of our house. With equipment in hand, I start raking, arranging, digging, and patting each plant into place.

There’s just something wonderful about being out in the sun on a spring day, digging in the dirt. My poor fingernails end up pretty dirty and my back begins telling me I’m getting too old for all this bending and stretching, but it’s one of my favorite Spring things to do.

It kind of compares to a drive through the mountains when the trees are full of new bright green leaves with the sky making a beautiful backdrop in baby blue. God’s handiwork brings us pleasure whether it’s mountains, deserts, or oceans. His handiwork brings us beauty, color, and a sense of his creative nature.

Back to my flowers—I purchased several other potted blooms, put them on the back porch, watered them well, and went on a weekend trip. When we returned, three of them were sagging with such sad blooms and leaves, I thought they were goners. But miraculously, they perked back up when I watered them again, ready to bloom where they awere planted

How like the flowers we are. We thrive in our spiritual lives, thinking of our Savior, answering his call to help people, relishing new thoughts in Scripture, feeling the Lord’s movement in our lives. But, when we go away, become negligent in prayer and failing to read his Word, our petals can become rather limp and saggy.

So as you move into this wonderful uplifting summer (away from the freezing, snowy winter days),  remember that your soul continually needs food from his Word and refreshing thoughts from your prayer time. Then you will bloom from where you are planted!

Next time, we will begin a study of the twelve disciples, The Chosen.
